Die myofunktionelle Therapie or Myofunctional Appliances is a treatment with removable appliances which influences the facial muscles and chewing muscles.
The appliances prevent the misalignment of jaws at early stage of development, on the other hand they treat the existing malocclusions.
Myofunctional Treatment - The right time to start, purpose of treatment
When to start with Myofunctional treatment:
- in primary dentition or in milk teeth
- early mixed dentition
- mixed dentition
- more younger the patient and more growth spurts are there, the better prognosis and more chances to prevent misalignment of teeth and jaws.
Aim or purpose of treatment:
The aim is to improve bad habits such as:
- Tongue thrusting
- incorrect swallowing
- mouth breathing
- so we can prevent tooth and jaws malocclusion
Functions of Myofunctional treatment or Functional orthodontic
The functional orthodontic appliances use the orofacial muscles to correct the existing jaw malocclusion in children.
The skelatal malposition can be compensated by inhibition and / or by acceleration of growth.
The effects of functional appliances:
- lips closure
Tongue gets larger space
- Proper position of tongue
- nose breathing
- often used as Retention appliance after correcting the malocclusion.
Appliance wearing time and duration of Functional treatment
Very Important:
As these are removable appliances, Patient or children cooperation is required.
Wearing time: 12–14 hrs ! that means whole Night + few hours in day time.

- Documents for treatment & planning such as X-rays- Fotos and Digital scan or Impressions.
- Treatment plan discussion in detail with different options for your treatment according to your wish and misalignment of teeth and a look on digital simulation of your treatment plan.
- Treatment start. on this appointment , you will get your Appliance.
- Regular checkup in every 6-10 Weeks.
- Treatment finish. after aligning your teeth and achieving our treatment goals, active treatment is finished.
- Retention After finishing active part of treatment, we need to stabilise the teeth. Please click section Retention in detail.
